RootsMap is a family run business, established after years of experience in research.

Each map of a surname is produced individually, in-house - we do not outsource work elsewhere, nor are the maps reproduced from a CD or other website.

We believe our GB maps, which show distribution by place of birth, have more merit than place of census as a means of identifying the likely origins of a surname, although comparing different views of the distribution of a surname can be useful.

Our maps are the only ones showing surname distribution in ancient counties, before the great movements of population and the explosion in the birth rate towards the end of the 19th Century. Other maps based on place of census or contemporary data do not take these changes in society into account.

We take a pride in producing quality products which give both interesting and informative results as well as an attractive and decorative product.

We have developed the maps over some time, from first becoming aware of the academic study of surname distribution maps and their use in migration studies some years ago, especially the work of David Hey such as Family Names and Family History
